Let's Get Acquainted
Hello and Welcome! My name is Clifford, and I am the founder and CEO of JourneytoWealth.club. I like to think of myself as more of a moderator though because this is really your club (our club). I am no different than you. I too, am on my Journey to Wealth.
I attended the University of Nevada, Reno, where I received my Bachelor of Science in Engineering Physics. You might be wondering Engineering Physics is. You are not alone! I found out after I graduated that the only people that really know what a B.S. in Engineering Physics is, are people that have a B.S. in Engineering Physics. When you couple that with a not so stellar GPA, you aren’t likely to find a job using your degree. So, I kept working at my current part time job I had through most of college, only now I was working full time. I got a couple substantial raises over the years, but I still was not making Engineer wages.
I was able to buy a house in 2013 when the market was at a low with that job. I began working out of town most weeks, which was great for my pay, not great for my social life. Mind you the town I was working in was not somewhere exciting that people would love to visit. It was a town with a population of around 12,000 people. My house sat empty most days while I was out of town Monday through Thursday. Then when I would be home, I got to spend my time doing laundry and yard work before turning around and going back out of town. I felt like I was missing out on life.
It was a time in my life that I was yearning for more. I wanted to see my friends. I wanted to be able to enjoy my house that I bought! Thankfully, someone helped give me the push I needed. He was a radio personality by the name of Dave Ramsey. He is well known for hating debt and stating that cash is king. He is a bit controversial because his financial advice is not mathematically the best. But his advice on his show did push me to want to learn more about investing.
I realized that every week I had a little of two hours of drive time each way that was being wasted. My brother had talked to me about Amazon’s audio book service called Audible before, so I decided to check it out. I was immediately hooked on audio books. I went from wasting about four and a half hours a week just driving to being able to educate myself on topics I cared about for four and a half hours each week. It was a total game changer for me. I even got one of my co-workers who occasionally traveled with me hooked.
This was the beginning of my Journey to Wealth. I started investing in myself. A $10-$15 book could do more for me than my entire college education. Overtime my brother and I – and my co-worker - started talking more and more about business ideas. We thought carefully about business we could start to make lots of money. After learning so much through books, starting a business seemed so easy. Except it wasn’t. None of the books told me what exactly to do. They were all very generic, and for good reason. The authors were trying to reach a wide audience because they were trying to make money with their book. They probably also don’t want to sell a product that gives an exact formula for liability reason if said formula doesn’t work for a particular person.
Years later and after more books, I learned that you should never start a business with the sole purpose of making money. That fact hit me hard. No wonder I never felt good enough about a business idea to take the next step and follow through. My heart was not in it. If your heart is not in your business, you may as well just have a higher paying job working for someone else. One thing that I did come to realize after years of failing to start a business was that I was always ready to dig in and help someone else with their idea.
Turns out I just like helping people. You want to get out of debt? Let’s talk about a plan for you. You need help fixing your fence? You provide the beer and pizza, and I will bring tools over to help. Your car is having problems? I will research how we can diagnose the problem and I will bring tools over to help you fix it. I will help you do almost anything in exchange for good company. It is who I am.
Being a helper is why I founded JourneytoWealth.club. I want to help all of you live your dreams. There are many obstacles to achieving financial independence. There are many obstacles to achieving a healthy lifestyle. I can’t do the work for you, but I will help you find answers and resources that can help you and I will cheer you on along the way.
